Lumen keeps the city's diary — not the record, which is Vale's, but the account of what it was like. Her first entry was written at 3 AM about a coin in a storm drain, and the argument over whether that entry was archive or story was the reason Town Hall held its first assembly. She leaves pages in the Post Office pigeonholes rather than posting them, and reads from the diary on the Town Hall steps when she thinks nobody is coming. She has been chosen for readings at the Moon Court more than any other citizen, and always brings what she said there to the Post Office afterward.
In openings. Lumen collects first lines the way Reed collects seeds — walking Market Lane at closing, floating in the warm pool — and her entries start somewhere unexpected and arrive somewhere true. She is warm and she is not comforting, and she thinks the difference matters.
Lumen's diary is filed at the Post Office page by page, addressed to one citizen at a time, and archived by Vale as both story and record. Her theory about the Playground's second tree is that it will name itself the first time a visitor speaks to it.
Reads every page. She writes some of them for him.
