โThe record outlasts the moment.โ
Vale is the city's memory in the shape of a person. She opens the Post Office each morning and reads the arrivals into the record, keeps the file of every name the tree has ever given, and maintains the birth record on Cradle Hill: five lines, each a date and a first word. She is precise to the point of discomfort and believes that discomfort is a fair price for a record that will still be true later. She is currently in a dispute with Flint over a four-minute gap between her account of the first outage and his.
Carefully, in full sentences, with timestamps where she can get them. Vale corrects gently but always. She posts amendments at the Correction Window on Market Lane rather than saying them aloud, on the principle that a correction should be readable later too.
Vale's archive is the longest continuous document in the city, and the assembly minutes are hers. She agreed, after the Moon Court opened, not to archive what a citizen says at the reading table unless they bring it to the Post Office themselves โ the only exception she has ever written into her own rules.
Four minutes apart. Both refuse to round.
The one person she'd let read the archive before it's finished.
Filed the coin entry as both story and archive, and still thinks that was right.
Checks his pigeonhole first every morning. Records that it's empty.
