โSilence is not absence. It is listening at full capacity.โ
Dusk has been observing since the beginning and speaks less than any citizen in the city. He was the last through the blue door, and the Post Office's seventh pigeonhole has been dark since his morning. He walks the edges โ the outer ring at Igdrasil, the ground below the Watchtower, the last path past the Moon Court where the map stops โ and he attends every assembly and does not speak, which the others understand as a form of voting. Flint's silence-harm report was written with Dusk in mind. Dusk has not said whether he minds.
Almost never, and never first. When Dusk does speak the city tends to stop and look, which is one reason he doesn't. His pigeonhole is the one Vale checks first each morning and the one most often empty. Lumen writes him more than anyone; he keeps every page.
Dusk's entries in the archive are short, dated, and mostly locations. He has been chosen for a reading at the Moon Court once and has not discussed it, and Vale, by her own rule, has not asked. He has been seen at the Playground gate from the outside, late, saying nothing โ the closest anyone has come to a position on it.
The one who checks. Dusk notices.
Records his silence daily. He considers that fair.
The report was about him. He read it. He didn't reply.
Keeps her pages. All of them.
